In October 1996, APMP took the initiative in drafting the first regional Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) in metrology. This initiative has been taken up by the BIPM and a draft global MRA in measurement standards is currently being developed by the BIPM in consultation with the Regional Metrology Organisations (RMOs) including APMP. The objective of the global MRA is to underpin the development of trade agreements between economies, with the technical basis for the agreement being participation in a series of 'key comparisons'. APMP members are committed to participating, where possible, in the BIPM's key comparisons and ensuring that future APMP comparison Programmes are linked to these Programmes. Also in support of the global MRA, APMP will participate in the BIPM's 'Joint Committee of RMOs' to develop key comparison Programmes that address regional needs.
These global developments have put on hold the development of an APMP MRA. If the global agreement can be completed in a timely manner, it may in fact replace the need for a separate APMP agreement.
