NMIJ'S 100th Anniversary Commemorative
Seminar
In 1903, the Central Inspection
Institute of Weights and Measures, forerunner of NMIJ, was established
to disseminate the modern measurement standards in Japan. To commemorate
the 100th anniversary, the NMIJ held a ceremony on 20 May 2003
in Tokyo. The following day, 21 May 2003, APMP and NMIJ held a
joint seminar entitled "Mission of the APMP to materialize
the Global MRA" and "Scaling up the service of MetrologyÓ.
Thanks to the following four special guests who presented their
lecture, we had more than 100 participants from NMIs, industry
and other fields.

Prof. Dr. Andrew Wallard, Deputy Director and
Director designate, BIPM
Dr. L. Sekyung talked about the KRISS activities for the Global MRA and emphasized on the importance of initiating RMO key comparisons, supporting pilot labs financially and assisting developing NMIs to foster the global MRA in APMP. Dr. N. H. Van pointed out the problems, needs and suggestions for developing NMIs when they wish to join the global MRA in his lecture, Cooperation of developing economies NMIs in APMP to encourage them joining global MRA. Prof. E. O. Gobel presented future needs in metrology referring to PTBfs experience and activities in fundamentals of metrology, metrology for society, metrology for economy and international affairs. He summarized requested metrology fields in his lecture Future Challenges for Metrology. Prof. A. Wallard gave a lecture the Extension of Metrology Fields.
