Over 300 metrologists attended 19th APMP in Singapore
The 19th Asia Pacific Metrology Pacific (APMP) General Assembly was held from 1 -- 5 Dec 2003 at the Conrad Centennial Singapore. During the week, meetings of the Executive Committee, Developing Economies Committee, 11 technical committees and ad-hoc working group were held.
A Symposium with the theme gMetrology for the 21st Centuryh was also organised on 3 Dec 2003, in which the former Director of the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), Dr Terry Quinn, and Secretary of the Comite International des Poids et Mesures (CIPM), Mr Bob Kaarls, were among the distinguished speakers addressing topical issues such as the Metre Convention, metrology in chemistry, nanometrology, and use of CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) to underpin mutual recognition arrangements of accreditation systems.
Some 200 international delegates from over 20 economies and another 120 local participants attended the week-long event. The 20th General Assembly will be held from 18 - 22 Oct this year in Beijing, China.

Report on ANMET Meeting -
Agreement on Criteria for ANMET Membership Reached
The second Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Network for Materials Evaluation Technology (ANMET) General Assembly (GA) meeting was held at the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC) of National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Thailand from 13 - 16 Nov 2003.
Eighteen representatives attended the meeting from 11 economies, including Australia, Peoplefs Republic of China, Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. At the meeting, Dr Hidetaka Imai, former Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP) Chairman advised representatives on how to link the ANMET activities with the APMP Ad-hoc Working Group for the Evaluation of Materials Properties (now Ad-hoc Working Group for Materials Metrology) which was established in 2001 according to the resolution of the 17th APMP GA meeting. |

At the meeting, representatives agreed on the criteria for membership, that is, eany new members shall be National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) or NMI-designated institutes, which carry out research and development on materials metrologyf. The meeting also discussed the possibility of carrying out uncertainty evaluation in tensile test of metals and flexural strength test of ceramics, and the inclusion of a seminar on materials evaluation technology at the next ANMET GA meeting.
Inaugurated in 2002 as a result of the three-year pilot activities with financial supports from APEC, the ANMET covers the working areas among member institutions, of Round Robin Tests of materials properties; inter-comparisons and uncertainty evaluation; collaboration on the development of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs); proficiency test; human resources development such as seminars and training workshops; and construction of a database in materials properties.
